Lecture: France and the Yuanming Yuan Palace. Art, war and religion.

This lecture explores the history of artistic exchanges between France and China, centered around the Yuanming Yuan palace, near Beijing.

In the 18th century, French missionaries contributed to the construction of several Western-style palaces for Emperor Qianlong, who installed Beauvais tapestries gifted by King Louis XV.

However, in 1860, during the Second Opium War, the French and British armies looted the palace. Subsequently, Empress Eugénie established a "Chinese Museum" at the Château de Fontainebleau to display the looted art objects. This unexpected story highlights the various roles that art has played in the formation of modern international relations.
