Frank Horvat’s Hong Kong Dream

A talk with Fiammetta Horvat, moderated by Vanessa Franklin

In 1962, Frank Horvat was commissioned by the German magazine *Revue* to team up with writer Dieter Lattmann to create a number of features on major cities around the world. The duo arrived late that year for a stay in Hong Kong, where Horvat was fascinated to discover a dense city laid out vertically, packed with people, dwellings, objects, and symbols, where empty space was unimaginable. This setting perfectly suited the photographer’s style, as he liked to compose his images in black and white, filling the frame with his subjects.

In this talk, Fiammetta Horvat, daughter of the renowned photographer and administrator of the Frank Horvat Studio, will share with us many nostalgic, architectural, cultural, and even sensorial stories of Horvat’s Hong Kong and how he captured these moments through his photographs of cityscapes, people, scales, speed, verticals, and smells.

1962 年，法蘭克·霍瓦特（Frank Horvat）受德國雜誌《Revue》委託，與作家迪特·拉特曼（Dieter Lattmann）合作，創作一系列關於世界主要城市的專題報導。 這兩人於當年晚些時候抵達香港，霍瓦特驚訝地發現這座城市人口稠密，垂直發展，擠滿了人、住宅、物體和符號，空曠的空間簡直難以想像。 這種環境非常適合這位攝影師的風格，因為他喜歡用黑白照片構圖，並用他的拍攝對象填滿畫面。

在這次講座中，著名攝影師的女兒兼法蘭克·霍瓦特工作室的管理員菲亞梅塔·霍瓦特（Fiammetta Horvat）將與我們分享許多關於霍瓦特在香港的懷舊、建築、文化，甚至是感官的故事，以及他如何透過他的城市景觀、人物、尺度、速度、垂直線條和氣味的攝影作品捕捉這些瞬間。
