Quel a été ton premier contact avec la langue ou la culture française ? What was your first interaction with the French language or with French culture?

Quand j'avais 10 ans, j'ai regardé le film “Les Misérables", qui parle de la révolution française. J'ai pensé que le pays était extraordinaire car les personnes étaient déterminées et la langue était très attractive. J'ai découvert aussi que les immeubles étaient historiques et très beaux.

When I was 10 years old, I watched Les Misérables which was based on the French Revolution. I thought that France was an extraordinary country because the people were determined, and the language was very attractive. I also realised that the buildings in France were historic and nice.

Au début, le professeur (Jean Baptiste) nous a dit comment utiliser la phrase “comment tu t'appelles”. Avant, je ne savais pas encore comment la prononcer et l'utiliser. Et puis, il nous a monté une vidéo, dans laquelle une fille répète la phrase plus de 20 fois, comme une chanson. Jusqu'à maintenant, je me souviens encore de la chanson!

In the beginning, my teacher (Jean Baptiste) taught us how to use the phrase “Comment tu t’appelles ?” (What is your name?). Before that moment, I did not yet know how to pronounce it and use it. To make it easier, my teacher put together a video for us, in which a girl sings the phrase more than 20 times. Even now, I still remember the song!

Qu’est-ce qui te paraît surprenant à propos de la langue ou de la culture française ?  What initially surprised you about the French language or culture?

Si on compare le français et les autres langues, comme l'anglais, le français est beaucoup plus particulier. D'abord, il y a le “r”, qui est hyper difficile à prononcer. Ensuite, il y a le “h” et les autres, que nous ne prononçons pas parfois. Il y a aussi le sexe (sic) / le genre de tous les mots : le masculin et le féminin. Il existe seulement dans quelques langues et c'est dur pour moi de comprendre parce que nous ne savons jamais lequel est masculin ou féminin! Il n'y a aucune méthode pour les identifier! Mais c'est quelque chose qui rend le Français exceptionnel et amusant!

If we compare French and other languages, such as English, French is much more unique. First, there is the “r”, which is very difficult to pronounce. Then there's the “h” and the others, which we sometimes don't pronounce. There are also genders to words! The masculine and the feminine. It only exists in a few languages and it's hard for me to understand because we never know which is masculine or feminine! There is no method to identify them! But it's something that makes French exceptional and fun!

Qu’est-ce que représente la France pour toi ? What comes to your mind when you think about France?

La France, comme nous le savons, est un pays romantique. Il y a la bise, le Mur des "Je t'aime", les paysages et les couchers de soleil. Mais, surtout, c'est un pays historique.

France, as we know, is a romantic country. There is la bise, the Wall of Love, the landscapes, and the sunsets. But, above all, it is a historic country.

Qui vous a motivé à ce que vous avez accompli maintenant ? Was there anyone who motivated or encouraged you to achieve all that you have accomplished today?

Pour bien apprendre une langue, un bon professeur est absolument crucial : M. Jean Baptiste est un bon exemple. Dès que j'ai commencé à apprendre la langue, il a rendu toutes les leçons intéressantes et amusantes. De plus en plus, je comprends et je parle mieux. Après, il y a un jour, il m'a dit que je pouvais essayer le DELF A2. Je n’etais pas très sur parce que franchement, je n’étais pas préparé. Par contre, il m’a assuré que je pouvais le faire. Je peux également demander de l’aide quand j’ai des questions. Pendant tout le trimestre, je n’ai pas arrêté de faire des exercices de DELF et de poser beaucoup de questions à M. Jean Baptiste. Il m'a toujours répondu patiemment. Quand je faisais des productions écrites, je les lui envoyais souvent et il me disait ce que je devais faire pour améliorer mon texte. Même si c'était le weekend, il me donnait encore de l’aide. C’est grâce à lui que je peux accomplir cela ! Donc, vous pouvez voir, c’est son soutien et ses encouragements qui m’ont motivé!

To learn a language well, a good teacher is crucial, and Mr Jean-Baptiste is a good example. As soon as I started learning the language, his lessons were fun and interesting. And with each lesson, I was able to understand more, and I spoke better! Recently, he suggested that I could try to take the DELF A2. I initially felt unsure as I was not ready to take on this challenge. However, Mr Jean Baptiste assured me that I was more than capable of doing it. He told me I could ask for as much help as I needed. During the past month, I kept practising by doing DELF exercises and asked Mr Jean-Baptiste a lot of questions, and he was very patient and helpful. When I completed writing tasks for practise, I often sent them to the teacher, and he told me what I could do to improve the text. Even during the weekend, he was still willing to help and support me! Because of Mr Jean-Baptiste, I was able to accomplish the DELF A2! It was his support and his encouragement that kept me going!
