Showing the diversity of contemporary French cinema, we have been presenting French films here for more than 60 years at the oldest and best-loved cinema festival in Hong Kong. Thanks to its ever-original, curious and high-quality film selections, the Hong Kong French Film Festival, also known as the French Cinepanorama, is an essential rendez-vous for all the city’s film lovers.
Through the selection of six of the most famous of Melville’s movies, the French Cinepanorama celebrates a major French figurehead of film noir and world cinema.
A major figurehead of film noir and world cinema, French director Jean-Pierre Melville is an inspiration to many acclaimed contemporary directors, such as Quentin Tarantino, Bertrand Tavernier, Johnnie To, or Michael Mann. Melville was an actor, a scriptwriter, a producer; however, he was first and foremost a respected director, filming actors as prominent as Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Catherine Deneuve, Lino Ventura and many more.
Had he lived on, Jean-Pierre Melville would have turned 100 years old in 2017. For this occasion, the Hong Kong French Film Festival is pleased to feature six works of Melville’s. Additionally, the screening of Hong Kong film noir master Johnnie To’s “Vengeance” will prove a striking tribute to the latter’s celebrated French mentor.
